Properly Treat Your Bar Soap So It Lasts

  • Store it away from water. Whether it's in your shower or by your sink, make sure your soap is not under a stream of water or constantly being splashed with water.
  • Make sure it doesn’t sit in water. Not all soap dishes are created equal. Wire soap racks, soap dishes with raised pegs the soap sits on, or self draining soap dishes will all ensure your soap dries thoroughly and properly, instead of remaining wet and slimy (and melting away much faster).
  • Use a washcloth or loofah in the shower for a better lather, so you use less soap at a time.
  • Let your soap dry completely between uses, as often as possible. This might mean each person has their own bar of soap in the shower.
  • If you’re feeling really frugal, cut the bar into smaller pieces. If you are only using half the bar, or even a third of the bar, at a time, the remaining soap bar stays dry until you need it, and ultimately stretches your bar soap a little longer until you need a new one!
